Paying for childcare

Child Tax Credit

Do you earn less than £32,200?

If your family income is less than £32,200 per year (£26,000 if you have only one child) you may be eligible for Child Tax Credit.

The amount you are paid is related to your family's income and how many children you have. It is paid directly into the bank account of the children's main carer (usually the same person who receives Child Benefit).

Important facts:

  • Your family does not have to be in paid employment to receive Child Tax Credit.
  • If your family is in employment you will be able to receive Child Tax Credit at the basic family element of £545 per year.
  • If your family is in employment and you have a low income you may also receive child elements for each of your children as well as the family element.
  • If your family receives Income Support you will receive the full family element plus child elements for each child you have.
